Crescent (TM) - It's all about Drybrushing! |
I am excited to be able to recommend a newly developed, superior quality brush for drybrushing. This brush, the Crescent, is like no other.
*Shape* It’s unique shape, a full bodied, tapered arc allows you to drybrush broad areas using the flat of the brush while also enabling you to access the most minute spaces by simply turning the brush on it’s side. The gently tapered tip reduces the occurrence of harsh lines and permits you to work closer to the perimeter of an object without creating a hazy edge.
*Size* There are currently just four sizes because one Crescent does the work of several sizes of round brushes requiring you to switch less often.
*Content* The Crescent brush is composed of a unique combination of golden taklon and firm natural white bristles. This hair combination provides the perfect suppleness and flexibility to apply paint readily without allowing excess contact with the surface.
*Handles* Crescent brushes are made with acrylic handles, no swelling, loose ferrules or peeling paint. The first word to come to mind when using the Crescent brush is *Fabulous!*

|
Drybrushing Tip |
Because drybrushes are used without water, acrylic paint may start to dry and clump in the smaller brushes (1/8”-1/4”) if used for any length of time. To keep paint from drying and to help extend the life of your brush, load the brush first with Deco Art’s Canvas Gel. Wipe excess gel from the brush and proceed as usual. |

Brushes for Floating & General Use |
For several years I have been using brushes that are a blend of natural and synthetic hair. Early in my painting experience, all of the brushes that I was using were either 100% natural or 100% synthetic. There were qualities that I liked in each. The synthetic bristles offered the strength that I need to direct any stroke in the desired direction, while the natural bristles carried the necessary load to follow through without running out of paint. The natural hair helps the brush to glide along the surface while the synthetic hair allows the brushes to retain their chisel edges and fine points which are necessary for producing our finest artwork. Mixtique™ brushes by Loew Cornell are a blend of natural and synthetic hair, which offer the best of both worlds. With my inclination towards the use of lettering in my designs, a blended lettering brush is paramount; LC’s 8100 series is the right brush for the job. If you have not tried a blended angular for floating you may want to acquire one (I suggest a 1/2”). If you need a new round or liner you may want to give the blended variety a try and nothing beats a blended lettering brush. |
|
Floating Tip |
If you have never floated using a blended brush, conduct the following experiment: First load a 1/2” synthetic angle as you would for floating. Then load a 1/2” blended angular the same way. Stroke each brush on a sheet of palette paper and you will be able to feel the difference. For ease of manipulation I prefer to use Easy Float in the water basin. |
|
Stenciling Brushes |
A variety of stencil brushes are acceptable for use with my stencils but I find that, due to the intricate nature of the stencils, an exceptionally tightly packed brush or one with an absolutely flat end do not work well because they will not enter the fine openings. I’ve tried quite a few and have determined the Loew Cornell 1150 series to work well. The sizes currently available are 1/2” and larger. The large sizes (1-1/4” to 1-1/2”) are ideal for filling in the all over background stencils. I prefer specific size identification over a numbering system for stencil brushes because this allows a clearer assessment of the brushes necessary compared to what you have available. Typically when a specific size is listed, i.e. 1/2”, any reasonably close size is suitable, i.e. 1/2”-3/4”. |
